    LINCOLN — Jonathan Brouillette got things started for North Platte at the 2020 state swim and dive meet by tying for second on Thursday. On Friday, the Bulldog swimmers made some noise of their own, setting several personal records during the preliminary round.

      Rylee Holtorf had three hits to help Washington defeat Utah 4-1 in the Women's College World Series. She went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Washington's Lindsay Lopez got the win in relief of starter Ruby Meylan. Lopez allowed just one hit in 3 2/3 shutout innings. Meylan gave up just one run on two hits in 3 1/3 innings. Mariah Lopez went the distance for Utah and allowed four runs in six innings. Kendall Lundberg's RBI double produced the Utes' only run.

      Rylie West hit a three-run homer and No. 4 seed Tennessee defeated No. 5 seed Alabama 10-5 in the opening game of the Women's College World Series. Jamison Brockenbrough and Katie Taylor had two hits and Kiki Milloy scored twice for the Lady Vols. Tennessee's Ashley Rogers gave up two runs in four innings to improve to 19-1 this season. Jenna Johnson and Kenleigh Callahan each had two hits and Marlie Giles hit a solo homer for Alabama. The Crimson Tide committed three errors and gave up four unearned runs.

      American Coco Gauff has rallied from a tough opening set to beat Mirra Andreeva of Russia in an all-teen showdown in the third round of the French Open. The 19-year-old Gauff prevailed 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-1. That ended an impressive Grand Slam debut for the 16-year-old Andreeva. Casper Ruud also recovered from a set down to beat Zhang Zhizhen and end a strong run by the Chinese player. The fourth-seeded Ruud won 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4. Top-ranked Iga Swiatek continued her impressive run as she took just 51 minutes to beat Xinyu Wang 6-0, 6-0. Reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina has pulled out of the French Open because she is sick.

      Manchester City's mission to win a treble of major trophies has stayed on track after beating Manchester United 2-1 in the FA Cup final with the first of Ilkay Gundogan's two goals coming after a record 13 seconds. City has already retained the Premier League and now only a first-ever Champions League title stands between Pep Guardiola's team and immortality in English soccer. Gundogan scored the quickest goal in an FA Cup final that was timed by British broadcaster BBC at 12.91 seconds, United midfielder Bruno Fernandes equalized with a 33rd-minute penalty. Gundogan scored the winner in the 51st. It was the 142nd FA Cup final and the first between the two Manchester clubs.

      Corey LaJoie is finally getting a chance to drive for Hendrick Motorsports this week. He wanted so badly to drive the No. 48 car a few years ago when Jimmie Johnson was stepping away that he penned a letter to team owner Rick Hendrick. The ride went to Alex Bowman and LaJoie ended up with Spire Motorsports. But with Chase Elliott suspended for Sunday's race at World Wide Technology Raceway for his intentional wreck of Denny Hamlin, LaJoie will be driving the No. 9 car. Carson Hocevar will take his place in the No. 7 car for Spire.

      Max Verstappen has steered his Red Bull to pole position at Formula One's Spanish Grand Prix ahead of Carlos Sainz. The two-time defending champion and points leader has secured pole for four of seven races this season. Sainz got his Ferrari into the front row, with Lando Norris third for McLaren. Home favorite Fernando Alonso could do no better than eighth after his Aston Martin took some damage to the bottom after running through the gravel. Charles Leclerc took pole last year but this time he will start from 19th after his Ferrari was perplexingly slow.
